Mahie Blog: Math’s Hunt Riddles

IYC 2019Math’s Hunt Riddles

I had selected as a manager event named as Mathematical Hunt in my university's youth carnival. It was a good experience working over and heading a mass event. For that purpose, I had selected some mathematical riddles which I want to share here.
1)    How can you add eight 8's to get the number 1,000?

The key to this math riddle is realizing that the one place must be zero. 888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 1,000

2)    In a certain country ½ of 5 = 3. If the same proportion holds, what is the value of 1/3 of 10 ?

The answer is 4
 1)    An athlete is able to jump FOREVER. However, everytime that she jumps she gets a bit more tired, and every jump goes 1212 as far as her prior jump. Now, for her very first jump, she goes 1212 of a foot.

On her second jump, she goes 1414 of a foot, and so on and so forth. The beginning of her journey is shown in the gif below.

How many jumps does it take for her to travel 1 foot?
HIDE ANSWER
She will never get to the 1 foot mark because you keep adding smaller and smaller amounts!
2)    (a) (i) Jasmine earns $12.50 for each hour she works. She works for 38 hours each week. She is given a pay increase of 6%. Calculate the total amount Jasmine earns each week after the pay increase
(ii) Abdul earns $525 each week. He moves to a new job where he earns $462 each week. Calculate the percentage reduction in his earnings in his new job. Answer ...................................... % [2]
(iii) Maria is given a pay increase of 3%. After the pay increase, she earns $2472 each month. Calculate her monthly pay before the pay increase.
Answer $
(b) The exchange rate between dollars ($) and pounds (£) is $1 = £0.65 . The exchange rate between euros (€) and pounds is €1 = £0.74 . Dan changes €520 into pounds. He spends £260 and then changes the rest into dollars. Work out how many dollars he receives.

3)    If you multiply this number by any other number, the answer will always be the same. What number is this?
