Camouflaging skin, mesmerizing eyes and long, furry, fold thick tail gives unreal features. Astonishing commands and chasing skills for prey at such a difficult terrain coupled with its ability to survive in harsh climate. Pakistan is third largest population containing country.
There are so much to talk about these Himalaya kings and more about the harsh climate and difficult land features with melting glaciers and freezing breezes. But what saddens me is the legal and illegal poaching of snow leopard. Industrialization, urbanization and global warming snatched the most precious habitat not from these leopards but also from their prey. not availability of prey compelled them to move to the local communities where people harm them or ill them. Sometimes they are killed accidentally as recently near Muzaffarabad a leopard rushed to the village and unskilled people killed him while trapping.
Snow leopards are unique in the list of wild animals Allah granted to not only Pakistan but also to world. It's distinctive skin, teeth and features makes it more valuable. But he pays a high price for these features. Human beings are always being selfish for their own interests and that why they killed these endangered species unconditionally for trade purposes. Demands for snow leopards teeth and skin is always high in international market and a cause for the peoples trade.
Besides these harsh experiences there are a pour of rain. When we saw a man saving a six months leopard, feed him, took great care of him and more surprisingly in his own environment. Safari arks system is same like this snow leopard story. but is this justice with leopards. leopards who can run along undulating lands, whose habitats are 15000 feet above land where we reach scarcely. For these leopards can we provide such natural habitats in Safari parks. Can we develop such remarkable and astonishing hiking skills in cubs ? These questions does not means that i am against safari parks but i am against hunting leopards. i am against that developments which bereaved us from such brave and strong wild beauty.
It was believed by researches made in 2017 that there are nearly 400 individuals left of this Gilgit Baltistani snow leopards. This amount is eye opening because every day about 400 hundred snow leopards are killed for trading worldwide. But many NGOs including WWF are working hard to save him. Many efforts are made so its population growth possible. At this time when from captive breeding to tube babies every thing is possible how the humans let these species to run out. It's also like asset to Pakistan and Pakistani nation. I had once a part of WWF awareness campaign. Awareness is more important that how to control such animal. And if he comes to our villages due to starvation let him fill his stomach and do not harm him. To feed him is also the responsibility of the residents of Pakistan as they feed their own herds. Due to already taken measurements there are good news about his increasing population but still there is a long to go. Be unite for this national and noble cause and be patient even to this wild cat.He needs our politeness.
